  • Complete Carpet Care Tips

Putting new carpet in your home is very expensive so carpet-care is extremely worthwhile. It very important to pay close attention to these carpet care tips you will get here. Then you can take the absolute best care possible of your carpeting.

Keeping your carpet clean also assures that your family is living in an environmentally healthy atmosphere. Regular vacuuming alone does not always ensure that your carpet is clean. There are several different ways to care for your carpet. Vacuuming regularly prevents dirt from getting embedded down deep into the fibers of the carpet, a major reason of carpet damage. While vacuuming your carpet every day would be ideal to keep carpets in the best shape possible, vacuuming a high traffic area at least twice a week is more realistic. For the best results, vacuum slowly over an area going back and forth and side to side in parallel rows. About six to eight strokes of the vacuum cleaner is needed if the area gets high traffic.

But, vacuuming a carpet does not keep it very clean for long. Shampooing a carpet occasionally is necessary to really get carpets clean. To loosen and absorb deep down dirt, spray a shampoo solution onto the carpet. Allow the carpet to dry and then vacuum. A better method of carpet cleaning is steam cleaning. This process uses a liquid-based cleaning agent and a steam-cleaning machine which brings dirt to the carpet's surface where it is then vacuumed up.

  • 10 Carpet Tips For Longer Lasting Carpet

Carpet can be one of the most expensive investments we can make to our homes. Having a good general knowledge of carpet care, and proper cleaning and stain removal techniques, we can keep our carpet looking nice and fresh, maintaining its quality for years to come. Here I will share with you 10 carpet tips that will help you to ensure long lasting carpet.

    1. Placing rugs or mats at entrance areas and high traffic areas will cut down immensely on the wear of your carpet and its exposure to dirt.

    2. Consider enforcing a "no shoe" rule to ensure that less dirt from the soles of shoes gets tracked into your home. This will cut down considerably on the amount of time you will need to vacuum.

    3. Before vacuuming, note all the areas of the house where there is the most activity. Target these "high traffic" areas and go over them multiple times. Make sure to overlap your passes. Even if you don't get a chance to vacuum often, as long as you cover "high traffic" areas you will accomplish much of the vacuuming your carpet will need.

    4. Make sure to catch stains as they happen. The longer you let a stain sit in your carpet the harder it will become to remove. Club-Soda works wonders as a natural cleaner and stain-remover. But if you prefer commercial spot-cleaners these will be able to remove stains as well. When using commercial spot-cleaners make sure to stray away from heavy chemical agents - this might actually damage your carpet rather than help it.

    5. When using any chemical agents on your carpet make sure to test the product on a small area of your carpet first. All carpets are different and some are sensitive to acid and alkali based cleaners and will cause the carpets to lose its color.

  • How to Clean Carpets

A dirty carpet not only mars the grace and decor of the house but can actually make you and your family members sick, as it is the perfect niche for dust mites and mold spores. Therefore, carpet cleaning is as important as having a bath everyday. There are a number of ways to keep the carpet clean, shiny and free from insects. Let's take a look at them.

Lift and Shake: The easiest thing that can be done daily is to lift the rug and shake it well, in order to dislodge the dust. Thereafter, sweep the rug with a broom. It keeps the carpet free from dust. To maintain the shine and texture of the rug, mere lifting, shaking and brooming will be inadequate in the long run. Therefore, other methods need to be applied every now and then.

Vacuum the Carpet Mat: Vacuuming the mat is a good idea. It removes the dirt and is the only way to keep dust mites off the rug. Brooming loosens the dirt on the carpet; therefore, to obtain the best results, broom the carpet first and then run the vacuum cleaner over it.

Use Detergent: Not every detergent is suitable for this job. In fact, many washing powders that are meant for washing clothes, are too harsh and can damage the fabric of the rug.

Nowadays, you can find detergents that are specific to this purpose. They come in the form flakes as well as powders. The detergent needs to be sprinkled on the carpet followed by pouring an adequate amount of water. This combination of detergent and water is then left to soak into the carpet for the time recommended and as per the directions given. It absorbs the dirt buried deep in the fiber of the carpet. The carpet can then either be wiped off with paper towels or vacuumed up with a vacuum cleaner.

This technique is quite effective and can easily be performed at home, on a weekend basis.

Call a Professional Cleaner: All the methods mentioned above are easy to adopt and are very practical to use. They would no doubt keep your carpet clean. However, it is recommended you hire the services of a professional carpet cleaner, once a year. A professional cleaner cleans the carpet with the aid of a special machine meant solely for this purpose. The machine uses steam for cleaning.

Renting the machine for a day or two, in order to clean the rug yourself is also a feasible idea. Apart from cleaning the mats and rugs, there are a number of dos and dont's that must be followed, to remove stains and spills from your carpet.

    Things to Avoid

There are many things we do to clean carpets. Rarely, do we know the extent of harm that the cleaning process can cause to the carpet. Therefore, it's very important to be aware of the methods and substances that should be avoided during carpet cleaning.
    • Never oversaturate the carpet with detergents and avoid using harsh chemicals. Rugs have dyed fibers. Overwashing or using strong cleaning compounds can damage the fiber and fade the dye.
    • Avoid scrubbing the carpet, while removing any spill or stain.. It would drive the staining agent even deeper into the fiber. Instead, moisten and blot it.
    • Never steam cook the carpet. It facilitates the formation of a chemical bond between the rug fiber and the dye and would only make the stain more resistant.
    • Never bleach the carpet, as based on the chemical composition of the stain, the bleach would actually help the stain to set in.
    • Do not use ammonia-based cleansing agents, as ammonia has a tendency to discolor the applied area completely.
    • Avoid using detergents meant for clothing and automatic dishwashers to clean carpets as these are too harsh.

  • Carpet Cleaning Methods

During a recession because people cannot and do not move house, they look to improve their homes, re-decorate and have their carpets professionally cleaned until the market picks up. Carpet cleaning is available in many forms: do-it-yourself, wet cleaning, dry cleaning, or hiring a professional. Carpet cleaning is a cost effective and good way of restoring your carpets. The type you choose will depend on how much cleaning you need and the type of carpeting you're cleaning. For spot cleaning in homes, many spray-on solutions are available, either as foaming agents or liquid.

Four popular carpet cleaning methods are Shampooing, Dry foam (Dry Cleaning), Dry Powder and Hot Water Extraction (Steam Cleaning).

Shampooing is the use of a motorized circular brush in which foaming cleaning products are introduced to the surface of the carpet and are then scrubbed into the carpet. The theory in the shampoo method is to generate a lot of foam in the carpet, allow this foam to dry, have the resulting residue attract the soil, and vacuum up the residue and soil the next day. Shampooing has extremely good agitation. This method, unless it is used with some other type of carpet cleaning London, has no extraction in the cleaning process but rather relies on vacuuming after the shampoo dries. It it the oldest method of carpet cleaning. Because of it's high aggressiveness, and the large amounts of cleaning product residue it leaves, this method is not recommended for most cut pile residential carpet.

Dry foam (Dry Cleaning) is very similar to shampooing in that it relies on the aggressiveness of the brushing action, which is usually counter rotating cylindrical brushes. This method has the same weaknesses as Shampooing with the additional one of not being able to deep clean. In this method, dry absorbent compound (containing small amounts of water) is sprinkled over carpet or worked into the carpet with a machine. This purpose of this cleaner is to attract and absorb soil. Mechanical agitation from a brush works the cleaner through the carpet. The theory is that the liquids dissolve the soil and this soil/detergent/solvent mixture is absorbed into the carrier and is then vacuumed up. This method has the advantage of drying very quickly because of the small amount of moisture used. This method may be considered as an interim cleaning between more effective deep cleanings. Soapy and sticky residue from conventional shampoo and dry foam methods of cleaning can cause rapid re-soiling of your carpet.
